Sozopol — Ropotamo

A small city, filled with southern romance with a unique atmosphere of seaside province is located on the rocky peninsular of the southern part of Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
For centuries the city has changed its names and rulers, but for the very day it has preserved its original spirit.

We have no traces of the Thracian settlement name existing on the place, where in 610 BC Greeks erected a city “Apollonia”. In 10 centuries the city is known as Sozopol ("city of savor").

In 72 BC a rich and wealthy Apollonia was distracted by legionnaires of Mark Lukull. City’s pride – a 13-meter high bronze statue of Apollo was transported to Rome. Being in decadence during the times of the Ottoman Empire, Apollonia started to rise in the end of XVIII century.  Today it is a bright, sunny and attractive city: paved streets, old houses and churches and a very specific accent of local fishermen, proudly calling their small white boats “Ships”.  The city is famous for its artistic festivals “Apollonia”, held yearly in September and attracting professionals from all over the world and spectators. Walking along narrow streets of Sozopol you will inhale the air of ancient times; enjoy century-old sycamores and pomegranates, growing in the yards of antique houses. Here you will forget the bustle of the modern life.

Varna

The corner stone was laid by Prince Alexander Batenberg in 1880. The Cathedral has 3 altars: Central one is devoted to Holy Mother Assumption, Southern – to St. Nicolas Mirikliisky, and Northern – to St. Alexander Nevsky. The greatest treasure of the Cathedral are the frescoes, performed under the direction of professor Rostovtsev. Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha monastery– is the most famous middle ages rocky monastery of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It was inhabited by monks-anchorites during the Second Bulgarian Empire XII-XIX centuries. Rooms of the monastery were gouged out in the two levels of the 40 meters limestone cliff.
After the Turkish conquered Bulgaria in the end of XIV century Aladzha monastery, alike many others, fell into decay and most probably in XVII-XVIII centuries was desolated once and for all. In 600-700 meters to the Northwest one can find a group of caves, called “Catacombs”. During archaeological researches the scientists found ceramic items, images of crosses on the walls of the second level, which means that catacombs were inhabited in the period of the early Christianity. Later, Aladzha monastery and catacombs were a part of a large monastic complex. Since 1906 the monastery is turned into a museum and tourist’s complex. In 1912 it was officially announced an antique monument, and in 1957 a monument of national significance. In 1975-77 close to the monastery a museum was erected. Along with its permanent exposition it annually houses rather curious exhibitions.
